By regularly changing your furnace filter, you will prolong the life of your furnace (heating) and air conditioner, also known as your HVAC system. How? By doing this simple task, you will maintain its rated efficiency and improve your home’s indoor air quality. If you don’t, I can assure you that you may be shortening its production life and causing unnecessary dust and dander to circulate around your home.
There are many reasons to change this filter on a set schedule. One reason to do this is to ensure that the air your house "conditions" for you to breath and stay comfortable will continue doing so for a long time. When a filter becomes dirty, the HVAC system efficiency noticeably drops because the air cannot move through it as designed and this causes the unit's motor to work harder creating strain and eventual mechanical problems in the long term. Most filters cost between a few dollars to more than $100 depending on your HVAC system.
So how often should you change your air filter? Well that depends. For most homeowners, once a month is standard practice. However, some HVAC units have filters that only need to be changed once or twice a year - others every 90 days.
